Model DynaCool-14 (Quantum Design, Inc.)

The PPMS is a versatile measurement platform providing turnkey and customizable capabilities to measure a wide range of material and device properties as a function of temperature and magnetic field.

Base Capabilities

  • Magnetic fields up to 14 T
  • Temperature control from 1.8 K to 400 K with 1% accuracy
  • 25.4 mm bore
  • Closed cycle cryogenic refrigerator

Measurement Options

  • Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) for measuring dc magnetic hysteresis with a magnetic moment sensitivity of 10-9 A-m2 (10-6 emu) over the full 14 T field range. Sample rods for thin-films, bulk, powder or liquid samples are available and samples up to 6.3 mm in diameter can be accommodated. A larger detection coil set accommodates samples up to 12 mm in diameter, but with reduced magnetic moment sensitivity. A sample heater increases the temperature range to 1000 K.
  • AC susceptibility measurement with a magnetic moment sensitivity of 10-11 A-m2 (10-8 emu). The excitation field can range from 0.4 A/m – 1.2 kA/m (0.005 Oe – 15 Oe) at frequencies of 10 Hz -10 kHz.
  • Torque magnetometry to determine magnetic anisotropy of materials. The magnetometer has a magnetic moment sensitivity of 10-11 A‑m2 (10-8 emu) at 14 T applied field.
  • AC electrical transport measurement to determine ac electrical resistivity, Hall effect, current‑voltage (I-V) curves, and differential resistance as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The instrumentation provides 1 nV sensitivity with an excitation current range from 2 nA to 100 mA.
  • Four-wire dc resistance measurements or determine sheet resistance using the van der Pauw method. The excitation current range is 5 nA to 5 mA and the maximum resistance that can be measured is 4 MΩ with a precision of 0.01%.
  • Thermal transport measurement to determine thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient.
